Getting In the Groove

So, classes have started and I am impressed needless to say. All of my professors are pretty chill. I did have one little hiccup with my math teacher. I heard through the grapevine (a.k.a. RateMyProfessor.com which is a lifesaver!!!), that they were less then desirable so to speak.

I will keep the person’s name anonymous for the sake of staying professional.

However, after visiting 1810 Liacorus Walk and seeing my advisor named Tammy Rice, I was able to change my schedule for the better.

If you are Pre-Med Track, I highly recommend doing this if you feel uncomfortable with your scheduale. It did wonders for me and I feel like a huge weight has been lifted.

Moral of the story: Make every class you take at college work for you. Temple offers many opprotunites to do this so, reach out and grab them!

My First Week of Spring

Hey guys!

I just got back from the break and I’m excited about what is to come. Will I reach academic success? Win the lottery? I mean the possibilities are quite endless. The only thing that is really different about this semester is I will be taking two science classes instead one. Needless to say, I’m a little hesitant about this change. But exciting news! I’m takning Honors Biology. This is my first science class within the Honors community. Hopefully, I’m up to the challenge. They say that the professor is new so I’m interested in meeting him. Even though I’m taking more credits this year, it seems that my scheduale is looking up. By recently becoming an Honors Peer Mentor and trying out for RA Selection, I feel more a part of the Temple community than ever before. Well wish me luck and I will keep you guys updated!

In case you were wondering, I will start posting current journals now! Yeah!

I think from looking at my previous posts you get a sense of the journey that this year has been so far. And now I have almost come to the end of my first semester. I can’t believe that time has flown this quickly…… but I better because FINALS ARE COMING. Hide the women and children!!! AHHHH

(Ok now that the dramatic sequence is complete..)

How does one even begin to study? I just have to ask this because in my high school we never had finals. Well, I think i found my first key. This is the coolest study website ever! It’s called www.studyblue.com

Studyblue.com allows me to do things like upload notes, and generate flashcards, and even find others in my class to study with. It works on both the high school and college level so maybe you could find something of intrest there. Temple was the first to email the student body about the information so I just want to pass it along.

In other news, my life has been going pretty well. I’m not swept up in movie star romance or like climbing Mount Everest over winter break, but I’m really digging the whole college scene. I am growing more comfortable with my role as a student you know?

I’m starting to know my limits such as how many hours I can stay up in a row while still being cognoscente. Overall I’m into the swing of things. Oh one major “Tip of the Day” I want to bestow upon all two and a half people will ever look at this blog, “Learn how to study smarter, not harder.”

I believe that is the best advice I have ever received. See, If you are not aware already, I am a science major (and let’s just say the curriculum isn’t a walk in the park ok), so I thought that the best way to study was doing like a million problems or reading every chapter three times, but that really is not the case.

The most knowledge you can gain in a quick amount of time comes through understanding things the first time. Even, if you can’t quite figure out the big picture, know the jest of it. Getting through college examines, you must understand the subject matter in it’s entity. So, that was the tip.

Also, I found some really awesome study guides at Dartmouth’s website. Get on those, because they help you in a clutch.

Progression

This past week has flown! Time seems to be whirring by now that the year has picked up. Now, within class we are starting to get a bit more in depth which is interesting. I must admit that I am still getting a handle on getting more into the swing of things like where and when classes are. I find myself going through all the same steps of transition that I went through in high school. Like, when I first started taking the bus to home by myself afterschool, I would get lost and be nervous. But when I just let go of all of the stress about finding my way home, I knew where to go like the back of my hand. Maybe college is like the bus. It’ll take me to where I need to wherever I need to go educationally; I just need to learn the route. Socially things are smoother as well. I’m starting to have patterns of where I eat and who I hang out with, which is always a good thing. Also the things Ana mentioned about finding a place to disappear were really helpful. After considering all of the places I could go I picked Paley Library third floor. It really is dead quite up there. But it’s nice though. And when the quiet gets too quite I can always go downstairs or get on the computer. I was nervous about going to the Library at first because I didn’t want to study in a place that was too serious. But when I finally did try it out, not only was it comfortable, time actually flew there too! I couldn’t get over how quickly an hour went by. I also found that the whole psychological thing we were talking about in class, how associating your dorm with work creates lax study habits, is very true. When I kept trying to complete assignments in my room, I found that was difficult. It seemed as if it would take forever to do one thing. But when I started using the library this week I slept sounder in my room, and studied harder outside of it. Using the library gives me better social interaction too. Overall this week has been good. I’m learning how to use my time more effectively by doing work until at least five everyday. After that I eat dinner and chill for like two hours, and then wrap up as much work as possible at night. This balance refreshes my memory before class and makes me feel a lot more prepared.

My First Journal Entry of the Year

Ok, so to give you readers some background i have been keeping a journal since September. Therefore, to give you more background on how my transition into college has been thus far, I am going to post my first journal entries now. Hope you enjoy!

Journal #1

So far my Temple experience has been bittersweet. I miss home and the familiarity of high school (both academically and socially). It’s not that hard making friends at Temple, however finding people on the same accord as me is a challenge. Like, for example, a large amount of people here drink but I don’t. In some instances I feel like a loser but I really think the only person making a big deal about it is me. Several of my friends tell me that’s what college is about- meeting new people with different interests. That’s true but I don’t think I will sacrifice my personal judgment to hang out or party. Maybe when I get older I’ll drink socially, but until then I’m not really interested.

A few days back I realized that I could have friends who drank and just not participate. Like I could hang out with them during the day and at night choose to go to the Reel or the game room. Whatever. I’m happy with my decision not to drink so I think I’m will try that plan out for a while. As far as determining the characters of people go, I’m rather skilled. So separating the sneaky characters from the pretty cool ones hasn’t been that hard.

Academically I have to admit I’m a bit lost. Even though I’m staying up to date on my homework and studying hard but thing s just aren’t quite clicking. Hope I do well on the Review math quiz is all I have to say. I can’t believe I have my first lab quiz next week! Scary! I don’t know, the course work is SO accelerated in comparison to high school. Even the MSRC session was going a bit fast for my taste. I guess I’ll do well, my mom says I have to give myself a chance so I will. But I’m still nervous.

Hey everyone! My name is Kendra and I am a freshman at Temple University. To start things off, I want to let all my readers know a bit about myself.

I was excited to attend Temple, but I did have some anxiety about atteneding school. I went throughalot of these days so far wondering if I would make it to the next moment. I’m just bringing this up for all those students that are going through what I went through.

On the plus side I am doing just fine now. Just know that it isn’t odd too feel the way you feel. If you need to talk to anyone feel free to post or comment. I WILL RESPOND.
